Bitcoin Slips Below $64,000 as ETF Volume Hits 9-Month Low

Bitcoin dropped below $64,000 on Saturday, tracking a broader pullback in equities, according to live data reported by CoinDesk. The current price sits at $64,414 — a level that underscores the cautious mood that has settled over crypto markets through July.

ETF Volume Hits a Quiet Patch

Spot Bitcoin ETFs, which drove enormous excitement when they launched in early 2024, are showing signs of fatigue in trading activity. According to The Block, weekly ETF trading volume fell to its lowest point since October 2024. More striking: ether ETFs have drawn nearly as much fresh capital as Bitcoin funds over the past three weeks, despite holding roughly one-eighth the net assets. That ratio suggests some investors are actively rotating toward Ethereum exposure rather than adding to Bitcoin positions.

This doesn't mean Bitcoin ETFs are failing — cumulative assets remain far larger than any competing product. But lighter volume during a price dip can reflect reduced urgency among institutional traders, not just retail hesitation.

Strategy Rewrites Its Bitcoin Scorecard

Michael Saylor's company Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, announced a significant overhaul of how it reports its Bitcoin holdings to shareholders. As covered by both CoinDesk and Decrypt, the firm is introducing a new metric called Net Bitcoin Per Share — a figure designed to show what common shareholders actually own after accounting for preferred stock and convertible debt obligations.

The move reflects a real tension in Strategy's structure. The company has raised enormous sums through financial instruments that rank ahead of common stock, meaning ordinary shareholders don't have a clean claim on all the Bitcoin on the balance sheet. The new metric strips those claims away to give a clearer picture. Critics might see this as reframing an uncomfortable reality; supporters argue it's simply more honest disclosure.

Strategy remains under pressure, according to CoinDesk, as this bear market stretch has weighed on its equity price even as it continues to hold roughly 580,000 BTC.

Quantum Security: A Longer-Term Question Returns

Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson made headlines arguing that Bitcoin risks losing its dominant position if the network fails to address quantum computing threats — specifically, if governance structures don't allow the protocol to adapt quickly enough. Separately, analyst Charles Edwards told Cointelegraph that a credible quantum roadmap from Bitcoin developers could push prices sharply higher in short order.

These are not immediate threats. Current quantum computers cannot break Bitcoin's cryptography. But the debate matters because Bitcoin's deliberately slow, consensus-heavy upgrade process — a feature many consider a strength — could become a liability if a genuine cryptographic emergency ever emerged. How quickly the development community could coordinate a response is an open and reasonable question.

Neither position represents consensus. Bitcoin developers have discussed post-quantum cryptography options for years, and no upgrade is imminent. But the conversation is gaining traction as quantum hardware matures.

What to Watch

The combination of softer ETF flows, a muted price, and renewed architecture debates paints a picture of a market in a holding pattern rather than a crisis. Bear markets tend to surface substantive technical and structural questions that bull markets drown out — and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

For anyone using Bitcoin to support charitable causes, the infrastructure that makes those transactions possible — the base-layer security, the fixed supply, the borderless settlement — is exactly what these governance and security debates are working to preserve.
